One-fourth is not a small minority
The Pew Research Center yesterday released a report on Muslims in America. There were a number of positive finds, such as:
- Muslims in America are generally less extreme and more assimilated than their European counterparts
- 71% of Muslim-Americans believe they can succeed with hard work
It wasn’t all sugar and spice, however. The survey uncovered many disturbing trends within the Muslim-American community.
9/11 Attacks
- Only 40% of Muslims in America believe Arabs carried out the attacks of September 11
- Among those Muslim-Americans who identify themselves as highly-religious, only 28% believe Arabs were responsible for the attacks
Views of al-Queda
- 5% of Muslim-Americans have a favorable view of al-Queda
- 7% of Muslim-Americans 30 and under have a favorable view of al-Queda
Suicide Bombing
- For Muslim-Americans over 30, 9% feel that suicide bombing in defense of Islam can be justified
- For Muslim-Americans 30 and under, 26% feel that suicide bombing in defense of Islam can be justified
Non-Muslim Americans should be disturbed that younger and more religious Muslims in the US have more radical views than their elders. Sadly, this means that the percentage of Muslims-America who approve of Islamic terrorist groups and who condone suicide bombing in defense of Islam will be increasing as time marches on.
At the very least, the study validates the suspicions of many non-Muslims Americans. Can CAIR and other pro-Muslim organizations continue to label people like myself “Islamophobes” in light of this study? After all, one fourth is not a small minority — in fact, it’s bordering on mainstream. Why aren’t we talking about this in America?
