Long time, no blog

I’m thinking about shifting the focus of this blog, from multiple updates in one day to something different. I think I’ll take an issue, whatever is occupying my thoughts that week, and do a more in-depth post. It’ll give me more opportunity to probe a bit deeper into an issue than I have in the past.

The result is that I’ll probably post about once a week, but each post should be longer.

Affirmative action: opportunities versus results

Our schools should be providing equal opportunities to all races, not equal outcomes.

Somehow, as Americans, we have been led to believe that our government is responsible for ensuring that no one becomes too poor nor too rich. In fact, the government’s role is only to provide equal opportunities, not necessarily equal results.

A bad idea

Iran wants France to oversee its nuclear program. Somehow, I am not reassured by the idea of having the French make sure Ahmadinejad doesn’t get nukes. Saddam was able to successfully bribe the French, and Chirac has already stated that he has no problem with a nuclear Iran.

House sex scandal

So it seems yet another Republican congressman is in trouble with the law. Mark Foley of Florida resigned as a member of the House of Representatives after allegations of solicitation of sex from a minor surfaced earlier this week. Apparently, Mr. Foley engaged in sexually explicit online chat conversations with underage teenage boys, even while conducting a vote in the House.

Mr. Foley’s actions are deplorable and he should recieve a fair and swift trial. This scumbag isn’t any better than any other sexual predators who preys on children, be them high-ranking politicians or school janitors.

However, his actions should in no way be associated with his stance as a Republican. Unfortunately, liberal pundits have had a jolly good time poking fun at Republican law breakers recently, and insinuating a connection between their illegal actions and their political views. Republicans have only stoked their fires though, as Foley’s name is only the most recent in a long series of Republicans in trouble with the law. Just this year, we’ve seen Abramoff, Frist and DeLay fighting their legal battles.

In the last four-plus years, the Republican image has taken a huge hit, partly due to these scandals. The American public (speaking as a whole) is not incredibly intelligent, so they may begin to associate lawlessness and immorality with the Republican party and its ideals. That would be a huge blow the the majority of honorable Republicans in politics, as well as to the nation as a whole. A few bad apples can spoil the whole bunch.
