The Left’s Moral Relativism
Speaking about September 11 and the war on terror, Chris Matthews said to a group of students at the University of Toronto:
If we stop trying to figure out the other side, we’ve given up. The person on the other side is not evil. They just have a different perspective.
I should actually thank Mr. Matthews for his ignorant opinion. Why? Because he makes crystal clear the distinction between liberal and conservative with regards to the war on terror. It behooves us to remember Karl Rove’s much-maligned truism:
Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war; liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers.
Rove’s quote is practically prophetic. I wonder if Mr. Matthews thinks the National Socialists just had a different view. Was Stalin guilty only of a misunderstood opinion? If we can’t call this or this evil, then just what can we?
Matthew’s position highlights the philosophy of moral relativism that permeates the left. It is a way of thinking which equates the act of murdering children to that of a misspelling, while simultaneously demoting America’s integrity to a level beneath that of the terrorists. I’ve said it before, if the West is to lose the war on terrorism, it will be via these moral capitulations that Matthews and the left offer radical Islamists. If we lose our ability to view these barbaric acts as wholly wrong, we will never muster the strength to fight terrorism. After all, what is there to fight? All we need to do is understand and all shall be healed.
Now, there is of course merit in knowing your enemy (or misunderstood friend), as Sun Tzu wrote. However, the time for reading and learning has come to an end. We know our enemy. He has been taught to offer us Islam, and if we reject, to engage in war with us (it’s in the Qur’an; apparently Matthews missed it). We can work to prevent future generations from becoming terrorists, but we cannot talk current Jihadis out of their mission. You simply can’t reason with madmen.

If we “KNOW” our enemy as you suggest we should be able to stop them from spreading or getting new recruits.

I totally agree. But you CAN reason with people who are at risk of being brainwashed by these madmen. The fact is we DO NOT know our enemy. Our experts on terrorism blame it on disgruntled youth largely. What a load of crap. We may know some intentions of our enemy, we may know some of their philosophy but we do not KNOW them enough to destroy them at their roots.
Undersanding is not going to heal all and you are silly for thinking that’s how people operate. Rather, understanding will help us combat the real evil. Understanding will help us save our troops by planning better and not sending them without adequate resources.
MOST muslims view these acts as wrong so even IF we were to perscribe to this notion of moral relativsim we have multiple religions and peoples on our side.
Lastly you do what so many in conservative circles do, you take a quote and run with it. Let me give some other quotes to put Matthews more in context:
“The smartest people understand the enemy’s point of view, because they understand what’s driving them.”
Yes and if you know what drives him you have a better chance at getting at the root of the problem (REASON with potential recruits for instance)
“We had a strong international unity coming out of 9-11. The world was never so united against terrorism and we lost that,”
WHy do you disagree with that. I think that is incredibly true. The streets of MUSLIM countries even were filled with candle light vigils. NOw we have effagies burning. Please explain how this is wrong.
“The period between 9-11 and (invading) Iraq was not a good time for America. There wasn’t a robust discussion of what we were doing,”
Yes I think Richard CLarke would agree with that. IF we had a robust discussion we would realize that intelligence sources from the likes of “Screwball” were highly suspect. INstead we rushed into things and our troops and civilians are paying the price of poor planning and not KNOWING the enemy well enough.
And finally let me come back to the original quote:

Was he talking ONLY about terrorists? I don’t really think he was. Maybe more aptly he was talking about the Muslim world, the notion that we tend to damn an entire religion when a majority of its followers agree with us. We are mostly on the same page but have a different perspective about certain things. Matthews never said anything about how the terrorist attacks were not evil.
I REGULARLY watched the Chris Matthews show and I can ASSURE you he is not sympathetic towards the terrorists in the least bit. This is based on dozens and dozens of programs.
So in short you pulling ONE line from an otherwise sophistocated speech is in itself ignorant. LIteralist one line interpratations of things get us into problems. You are so paranoid about the left destroying the world you run with one liners and fail to stop and think about the bigger picture or what someone said or our actions. BUt then again you think like the President.
You make contradictory remarks. In your first sentence, you claim knowledge of the enemy is enough to thwart the enemy. Then later you say understanding isn’t enough in and of itself.
Look, I did cherry pick that quote. Is it out of context? Hardly. That quote is representative of the moral relativism I spoke of one of my next posts. By the way, Matthews didn’t apologize for that specific quote, or say that he was misquoted, so I must believe that he honestly believes it, no matter what smokescreen you try to put up for him.
I harp on this idea over and over, that there is no evil and only understanding, because it is really harmful to the West’s ability to fight terrorism and Jihadis who want to impose Islamic law. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, FDR didn’t say “Oh, gosh, they’re so uneducated! We should have a weekend retreat with Tojo and the gang and sort out our differences.” No, he declared WAR. Although this is a very different kind of war, one the US hasn’t seen before, it still remains a war.
Idiots like Sheehan and Matthews only serve to undercut our national resolve by absolving the Jihadis of blame by in turn blaming the US (Sheehan, Moore) or ignornace (Matthews). We can and should have intelligent discourse about the war on terrorism. That’s why I have this blog, to promote discussion. But I think liberals want only discussion. Like you do so often, you ask a question, and then couldn’t give a damn about the answer. It’s almost like mental masturbation. If a question gives rise to more questions, great. If there seems to be an answer, then, holy crap, we don’t know what to do.
It’s not a terribly complicated situation. These guys have a message from God to kill whoever doesn’t accept their religion or live directly under their subjugation. For all the left’s intellectual preponderance over the backwater red states, it is conservatives who understand the gravity of the situation. While you sit in your ivory towers inventing new reasons why some people should hate us, and putting the real answers off limits, others take action. You know, the best leaders in history make mistakes. Washington made them, Lincoln made them, and so did Eisenhower. But you know what you have to do to make a mistake? First you have to do something. And that’s where I have NO RESPECT for liberals on the war on terrorism. Bush’s administration has made plenty of errors, some of them more costly than we even know. But for all that, it is infinitely better than Gore or Kerry who, like you, would still be scratching their heads asking if we can understand the suicide bomber a little bit more before doing anything rash.
Leaders make the best decisions possible with the information they have at the time.
You have no way/right to say Kerry or Gore would not take ANY action and would still be scratching there heads. There actions would be different but you can’t prove they would do NOTHING. Perhaps we would have NOT been at war with Iraq and more focused on bin Laden. Maybe he would be dead by our hands if we did not take our eye of the target by skewing off into Iraq and not giving the time to bin Laden. As Bush said about bin Laden “I’m really not concerned about him to be honest” Stead leadership in times of change?
Bush acted without really thinking. As I said I give him credit for having his gut be in the right place. He doubted things but the other neocons slam dunk yes-men attitude ruined things.
